The Welshman’s opportunism saw him catch Lille goalkeeper Tony Sylva, who was still organising his defensive wall, off guard, allowing Giggs to curl ball into the unguarded far corner.# E) B' p/ d- ]; I) V

Van der Sar admitted that goalkeepers rarely suffer the embarrassment of conceding from such a situation. But, despite sympathising with his opposite number, the 36-year-old Dutchman said he was simply happy to be in pole position to qualify for the quarter finals.

"I thought it was a valid goal," van der Sar told Uefa.com. "As a goalkeeper myself I can sympathise, because it's the sort of thing that only happens once in your career."
