The player himself has admitted that his knee problems are never likely to be far away, saying:“It’s the patella tendon and when you get this problem it stays with you. There aren’t a lot of answers… it’s something the doctors just say I have to manage.” Happily, post-Christmas, manage them he did, and by the business end of the season was firmly in the thick of the action, featuring in every one of April’s eight matches.

And though not always in what he might regard as his most natural position – in both Champions League semi-final games against Barcelona, as well as at Stamford Bridge when he replaced the injured Nemanja Vidic, he was charged by Sir Alex Ferguson with filling the right-back berth – he remained unfazed by the challenge, producing a series of assured and composed performances.' Given his grounding at Bayern Munich, it should have come as little surprise that Hargreaves shone when the pressure was on. And while his matchwinning free-kick against Arsenal was his standout moment of the season, his nerveless penalty in the Champions League final against Chelsea in Moscow – probably the best spot-kick of the night – came a close second in terms of moments that shaped the Reds’ season.
