Edwin: Giggs goal was valid

United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar says he thought Ryan Giggs' quickly-taken free kick was a perfectly good goal.

The Welshman’s opportunism saw him catch Lille goalkeeper Tony Sylva, who was still organising his defensive wall, off guard, allowing Giggs to curl ball into the unguarded far corner.

Van der Sar admitted that goalkeepers rarely suffer the embarrassment of conceding from such a situation. "I thought it was a valid goal," van der Sar told Uefa.com. "As a goalkeeper myself I can sympathise, because it's the sort of thing that only happens once in your career."
